Abstract
Placodonts, nothosaurs, plesiosaurs, and ichthyosaurs are now considered to have evolved from a common ancestral Permian stock. The ichthyosaurs probably branched off and returned to a marine environment earlier than the nothosaurs and placodonts. The plesiosaurs were the last, not appearing until Keuper (Triassic) time.
