Abstract
Diagenetic history may be recorded within paragenetic mineral sequences in the voids of fossil reptile bones. Sequential mineral paragenesis records changing environmental conditions during lithification which are not readily apparent in finer-grained sediments. Case histories from the Jurassic Oxford Clay Formation (marine) and the Cretaceous Wealden Group (non-marine), both in south-east England, are given and differences between diagenetic histories in mudrocks from marine and non-marine settings are emphasised. A proposed subdivision of bone void space from megavoid through to nannovoid is presented here.
